How To Make The Best Dog Diapers For Your Male or Female Dog For Cheap

This is the best way I found to make dog diapers cheap. Whether your dog is in heat or older and has incontinent problems this dog diaper will work for you. These doggie diapers will fit both male and female dogs and will stay on better than the pet diapers you get at the big box pet stores. I went to Petsmart and Petco to buy diapers for my dog and they were over $18.00 for 12, so I came up with this solution by going to Walmart )youcan also get them at Target) and purchasing these Little Swimmer disposable diapers they cost a little more than $6.00 for a quantity of 12 for a 66% savings over Petco. I just cut a hole for the tail and made my own dog diapers. They are a little harder to put on your dog but they stay on much better than the brand I purchased from the pet store which kept falling off.

How to Make Dog Diapers

Step One: Buy some Little Swimmers. You can get them at Walmart or Target I've even come across them at Walgreens and some of the other big chain Pharmacy Stores. I have a small dog she is a 20lb Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the 16-26lb variety work excellent. The Little Swimmers also come in bigger sizes.

Step Two: Look inside your soon to be dog diaper and make sure that the bottom has more padding than the top.

Step Three: Using a pair of scissors cut a hole on top for the tail (the top has less padding than the bottom). Unless you have a sheep dog then you can skip this step...lol

Step Four: Just put your dogs paws through the leg holes and pop the tail through your newly made tail hole and you got the best doggies diapers for 1/3 the cost of the big box pet stores. This is a great cheap diaper alternative for your dog that will actually work better than the brand you buy at the pet store.

This is my dog Roxy wearing her doggie diapers. She wouldn't sit still for a picture so I had to put her on a table. Hope you enjoy and please let me know if this worked for you by leaving a comment. There you have it a cheap way to make dog diapers!

I came across your blog while researching solutions for our furry 8yr old daughter who has been having accidents in the house. It's a temporary problem, a side effect of a medication she is taking. but we are finding large puddles everywhere even though we are taking her out as often as possible. I am going to try some little swimmers! Thanks a lot!

Thanks I think this might work with my 15 year mini Poodle. Her bed is covered with pee every morning and stinks so bad. Thanks again.

My 10 month old female shepherd after having general anesthesia would lose a whole lot of urine in her sleep. She sleeps in bed with me and I would cry. I came across your site. I ran out and bought the large and she has used them for 10 days and has been dry. Thank you so very much, You have no idea how much it is appreciated,

Thanks so much for posting this! I had just bought the doggie diapers from Petsmart this afternoon and they kept falling off. After doing some googling I came across this post - I'm heading to Walmart now to pick some Swimmers up. Thanks! :)

My 19 year old cat has been diabetic for 5 years (and on insulin twice a day). For the past couple of years he has been getting in the litter box, but doesn't squat enough so pees outside of it--I finally started buying those incontinence pads and placing them outside the litterbox. So I never had to change the litter, since he missed it, but just the pads.

This worked until recently when he now just totally misses everything. He goes towards the box and stops either way before, or when he hits the pad. So no matter what he pees on the floor, not the box or the pad. I think this must be senility or something--he thinks he's there but has stopped too soon.

So now I've finally put him in diapers. he's not officially incontinent, he just forgot how to get into the litter box.

I've tried various diapers and the hard thing is figuring out the sizing--too big and they fall off--too small and they won't close or are too tight around the thighs.

I bout the Pupsters brand and they work well but are very expensive, and they also seem to be way too tight around his upper thigh if I close them tight enough to get his waist and not fall off.

he is an 11 pound cat with a big body (slightly underweight for his frame).

I have tried regular baby diapers size 1 and they are too small. Have not tried size 2 yet.

BUT I did get these exact same little swimmers--they are actually diaper underpants, not a foldout diaper. These seem to be the easiest.

I cut a hole for the tail, but not like you did. I simply bunch it up in the proper spot and slice a cut with scissors--so the cut is sideways, although maybe this doesn't matter. I pull his tail thru and then pull his legs in the pants and pull it all up.

These diaper pants have a nice elastic WIDE waist so they seem to stay snug. I am using hte S/P 16-26 pound size although if there were a smaller size that might be slightly better.

But they are cute since they are colorful, too.
But this has made life much easier, only thing is, I have to make sure not to be gone to too long strenches of time so that he doesn't waddle around with a dirty diaper for too long. Not sure if cats get diaper rashes, but don't want to find him with one.

Thanks heaps! My 7 month old lab pup is going into heat I'm learning (horrifically) and found your post looking up what these diapers are all about. Sounds like a plan. Holy smokes I can't wait until this is over so I can get her spayed... ;n)

Just rescued a stray pup who promptly went into heat before we could get her spayed. The doggie bloomers were a joke. This was a great GREAT suggestion. She still chews them off eventually, but this is a much better and cheaper solution. Thanks for the tip!

great idea, thanks. I have 15 year old daushund and she has slept with me, all of her life. Now she's pees in her sleep. I have a great matress savor but i'm sick of changing the linins.

Thanks so much. Like the others hav stated, I hav a 14 month old large breed (German Shepherd Dog puerbred, large boned, german lines) and I hav never had a female before, always males. This heat thing really threw me when it was creating a horrific mess all over my 65 oz. carpeting. I tried using a pair of regular panties but that didn't cover her when she would be rather active inside the house. Then I bought a dog diaper from PetSmart ($35!) and she manages to get that off too.. I think this will work, or am hoping so. Again, Thanks so much for taking the time...for all of us who are at their wits end with this.. ~MOMMY

What a fabulous idea. We were headed to PetsSmart and read your blog. Ran over to Walmart and bought the Little Swimmers. Worked like a charm.

Suggestion. Fold diapers in half and make and cut a small V shape with scissors. Makes a better hole.

Thanks for this doggie diaper idea!

I've used these also in the past, but for a dog with a short tail, like my boxer and doberman, they just don't stay on. But for a dog with a tail, they were A+

Thank you very much for your idea. This helped me deal with my 14 year old Pointer's incontinence. I was able to use regular diapers. I cut a slit for the tail and it works.

Are these strong enough to keep the males from getting to them? I just started showing dogs so they have to be intact but absolutely don't want any puppies!!

Wonderful idea! Thank you!

One pup might be too small for these, so I might try baby Pampers, and see if that might work, too! Thanks for getting me to think outside the box!

We took in a cocker spaniel abandoned in an eviction and we did not know id she had been spaded or not. Well she is in heat now and can't be spaded until it is over. I have a young daughter in pull ups, so I cut a hole in the tail and used one for my dog. She can get out of it though and it tends to fall off. Since she has a short tail, I think an addition to your idea might be to get 2 sets of those double ended clips for gloves and use them to clip a ribbon around and under the dogs front paws and to the over and under side of the little swimmers so they wont fall off. Got to do what you got to do to save your carpets!

I'm going to try this. I've tried every other (child diaper to save money) and the yukky stuff in the diaper fall out all ove the place. The powder stuff that turnd to jelly substance when wet. Hope these don't do it. I'll let you know how I like it. Thanks, Gerri from VA.

My chihuahua had surgery recently due to a stubborn UTI and she is to be leaking urine. I ended up using a doggie pad (those used to train puppies) cut in to fit around the dog, cut out a hole for a tail and taped the edges. I think the diapers would work better, however, they would be more expensive but they would definitely look better. The pads are thinner though and they did seem to hold the urine well but did loosen up. Im hoping this will not be a long term thing. Thanks

I was looking for a quick fix however I like the idea of the swimmers but I don't like the idea of the cost. Might have to try it though especially when there's company...don't want the dog to look like she's homeless LOL. Hopefully will be doing this short term.

This worked perfect for my dog. We had some swimmers on hand for my daughter so used one. Trixie just started her period yesterday and we have carpet all over but the kitchen and bedrooms. It was hard to get on her but now that its on she is loving being able to sit next to her mama again on the sofa! THANK YOU!!

I had to laugh when I read this, because this is the same thing I did several years ago! When I was taking care of my mother before she passed away, she wore adult diapers. We had a larger Pom, about 20 lbs, and when she went into heat, I'd cut the hole, but because they were so big, I'd gather them up on her back and clip them with either a clothespin, or a chip bag clip! Worked great! Thanks for sharing for others! LOL

I hope this thread is still active. :-)

I tried using medium sized doggie diapers on our 16.5 y/o sheltie mix. They fell off.

So then I tried Pull Ups...same problem, they fell off.

What am I doing wrong?

I have tried the regular baby diaper on my dog,it was ok but it seemed uncomfortable (i could tell by the way she was walking).I read your post and went straight to the drugstore ;can't thank you enough. She is playing and walking like nothing is holding her. What a brilliant idea.

I have a jack russell and a onesie put on backwards so the longest snap flap comes up between her legs with a woman's pantyliner pad attached with its adhesive and a small hole cut just where her tail is above pad and below snaps, is perfect! I found $2 onesies at Wal-Mart in assorted sizes (our jack requires a 3-6 month size) in the baby aisle. She can't slip out of it and it's tight enough it holds the pad nicely so she can't chew at it either! I quickly slip it off of her before she goes out and use that time to attach a fresh pad before she comes in. Not sure how this would work on large dogs but on tiny to medium breeds it works great!
